Shopify has no native merge — so combined shipping is a workaround

Reddit merchants copy tracking across orders, create draft-and-cancel flows that email cancellations, or buy merge apps. ShipManta merges shipments with rules, undo, and a live combined box.

The problem

The same customer places two orders an hour apart. You want one box. Shopify makes you invent a process that confuses the customer or breaks accounting.

What stores report

Merchants trying “combined shipping” describe cancelled-order emails after draft workarounds, hand-copying one tracking number onto a second order, and refunding the extra shipping by hand. International DDP threads say the same thing plainly: there is no native merge.

When customers add a forgotten item, the common advice is “place a second order and we will combine” — which only works if the warehouse has a real combine step.

Why workarounds hurt

Fulfilling order B with order A’s tracking keeps Shopify quiet but loses a single shipment identity for postage, materials, and who packed it. Draft-and-cancel contaminates customer email. Apps that merge at the order layer can fight inventory and tax history.

How ShipManta solves it

Merge is a first-class shipment action. Rules suggest same-customer candidates (address, delivery date, pickup location, and other fields). Staff confirm the target, or Auto Merge runs the rules. Unmerge restores sources while the combined shipment is still Awaiting. Conflict tags explain why two shipments did not auto-merge so someone can fix the field instead of guessing.

The combined shipment stays awaiting and keeps every source order. Later Shopify edits — quantity changes, removed lines, delivery-date updates — can still land on that box. You are not frozen the way ShipStation’s combined order often is.

  • Manual Merge Into This when auto-merge correctly stays apart
  • Delivery-date strategy for which date survives
  • Local pickup merges only when pickup location rules allow
  • Activity log for every merge and unmerge
