Shopify order edits still ship the wrong items

Merchants report that removing or swapping a line in Shopify does not update ShipStation — so the warehouse packs cancelled SKUs. Here is how ShipManta keeps the shipment on the live order.

The problem

A customer removes a product or swaps a size in Shopify. The packing tool still shows the old lines. The box goes out with items the customer already cancelled.

What stores report

On Reddit, merchants describe a hard failure in the native Shopify–ShipStation path: once an order is imported, later edits do not reliably rewrite the packing queue. Cancelled products stay on the ShipStation order. New products may appear alongside the removed ones. Support and 3PLs then rely on manual notes — and sometimes the wrong assortment still ships.

That is not an edge case for stores with high “change my order” volume. It is a daily risk.

Why the middle layer freezes

ShipStation’s Shopify import historically treated the first snapshot as the working order. Shopify order editing is newer than that integration model. The packing tool and the storefront order diverge: marketing edits Shopify; the dock trusts ShipStation; neither side is lying — they are looking at different truths.

  • Removed lines are not deleted in the packing tool
  • Address and shipping changes need dual edits
  • 3PLs ask the brand to Slack every change
  • Workarounds (split the cancelled line, clone the order) create more IDs to babysit

How ShipManta solves it

ShipManta does not freeze a second copy of the order for packing. The shipment is built from the Shopify order and stays attached to it. When Shopify later changes quantities or lines, the awaiting shipment is updated — added lines open work, removed lines leave the box, and an awaiting shipment with nothing left can be cancelled instead of sitting as a ghost.

Packers see one queue that matches what the customer paid for after edits. There is no “remember to also change ShipStation” step.

What changes for the team

Support edits the Shopify order. The warehouse queue follows. Timeline events show what changed. You stop paying postage for SKUs the customer already removed.
